Surveyor’s Golden Disk No. 1 – Astronomic Latitude
With this diagram (etch-able in stone or other materials), a being in the Northern hemisphere, whether human or alien or any sentient being that can see light, will be able to, after studying this single diagram with the night sky, confirm the curvature of the earth, confirm its motion about a distant astronomic axis, and determine their latitudinal position. It is relevant for a few thousand years, or until precession moves the axis significantly distant from our North Star, Polaris. For now, it is a useful primer for those interested in how latitude has been determined, over land and sea, from prehistory to the Ancient Egyptians and Chinese, to Viking explorers, and all the way to present navigators.
Printout on slate, 11″ x 17″. Next step is chiseling a series of dots along each line, word, and form to etch the stone:
