P.S. It is important to have an accurate accounting of history and to empathize with the struggles of others. However, when you start blaming yourself for harms you did not commit (especially if conflated with race or sex), you know you have gone too far. Take a step back, and you will be exactly where you need to be.

  1. I had the incredible opportunity to interview Viola Davis for my last book, Braving the Wilderness. You may know Viola from her performances in The Help , How to Get Away With Murder , and Fences for which she won an Oscar for best supporting actress. She is the first Black actor to win the Triple Crown of acting—the Emmy, Tony, and Oscar.
